TFSA contribution room
Last updated
The tax-free savings account dollar limit for 2026 is $7,000. That amount is added to your contribution room on January 1, 2026, if you are a resident of Canada and were at least 18 at some point in the year.
Room is not only this year’s limit. The CRA adds unused room from earlier years and adds back withdrawals made in the previous calendar year. Contributions you have already made this year reduce room immediately. A withdrawal does not give the room back until the next January 1.
Why the CRA number can be behind
The CRA has said that updated TFSA room for the prior year is the figure to check in your CRA account once those records are processed, and that you should still compare it with your own contribution and withdrawal history. A deposit made today will not show up there at once. Over-contributing generally brings a 1% tax for each month the excess stays in the account.
A lifetime illustration is not your room
Adding every annual limit since 2009 is a ceiling for someone who was eligible the whole time and never contributed or withdrew. It is the illustration on the TFSA calculator. It is not a substitute for your own records.
Methodology
Dollar limits in this guide are the amounts in the CRA tables cited above. The guide does not estimate investment growth or tax on an over-contribution. Use the calculator for a projection, and change the return assumption yourself.
