GST, HST and PST
Last updated
The goods and services tax is 5%. In Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island it is folded into the harmonized sales tax. The HST rate is 13% in Ontario, 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, and 14% in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia’s rate dropped from 15% on April 1, 2025.
Alberta and the three territories charge the 5% GST and no provincial sales tax. British Columbia adds 7% PST, Saskatchewan 6% PST, Manitoba 7% RST, and Quebec 9.975% QST. Those provincial taxes are calculated on the price before GST, not on a price that already includes GST.
Not every purchase is taxable
Basic groceries are a common zero-rated supply: GST/HST is 0%. Some supplies are exempt. Resales of housing, used goods, and private sales follow their own rules. The GST/HST calculator assumes a fully taxable supply in the province you pick. Place-of-supply rules can charge the rate of the province where the supply is made, which is not always the billing address.
Methodology
Rates are the CRA table for supplies on or after April 1, 2025, which still applies in 2026. The federal and provincial parts of HST follow the participating-province split. The guide does not list every exempt supply.
